Nellie's.

My hometown, Beverley, is a medieval market town, renowned for its pubs, churches, horse racing, folk music, morris dancing... and did I mention pubs? Nellie's is the best pub in Beverley and, as long as we're on my blog, I'm calling it for the best pub in the entire world. Still lit by gas lamp, it's a Samuel Smith's pub, which means delicious beers all brewed in Yorkshire, sold at low prices that the brewery maintains, only increasing prices in line with tax and inflation. Nellie's is dirty, dark, all winding passages and lamp-lit rooms with only the sounds of the soft voices of happy Yorkshire drinkers: Sam Smith's don't play music or television in their pubs, to keep costs down.

That's me Mam in the first picture. The pub is called The White Horse Inn but everyone calls it Nellie's, after long-standing former landlady Nelly Collinson. I also heard it was haunted by her, if you turn the white horse above the door at midnight, you see her ghost...

  1. Hello Caroline's Mam!

Nellie's looks just like the sort of pub the husband would enjoy. I really feel that, knowing so many of you Hull folk, I should visit the place someday and this is looks like much more of a draw than The Deep.

  2. I want to come for the Beverley Folk Festival one year! I used to mock the beardy weirdies, with their Aran jumpers, walking boots and morris dancing ways. Now I would feel totally at one with their number. We should sort it out one year. (Many awesome pubs, that's all Paddy needs to know.) x

  3. Pub looks fab - and so cozy! I know what you mean about folk festivals. I used to get free tickets to the Cambridge one in my late teens and used it as an excuse to get drunk and buy tie-dye shirts. Now I think back to the line-ups and wonder why I didn't pay more attention to the music. (Answer: I thought they were all sad old hippies who needed to find a Superfuzz pedal and use it)

  4. Dear Caroline, The Actor would absolutely love Nellie's! Can you believe I've never been to Yorkshire? And I've never even heard of Beverley. What a great name for a place. The first thing that popped into my mind was Alison Steadman's character in Abigail's Party. The Actor is taking me to the Lake District next year so I must check some of Yorkshire out, maybe we'll go to Nellie's xx

  5. For folk who don't know Beverley I should also like to add that Beverley is filled with beautiful Georgian houses, fabulous shops and, in addition to the Folk festival, holds an annual Early Music festival. Great place to live!

  6. Your ghost story reminds me of that song about Mollie Malone and her wheelbarrow of cockles and mussles.

Gosh, I have clearly been absent from your blog for too long (blame work + an overseas holiday rather than waning of interest). Look at the new layout! Very snazzy.

  7. I agree, Samuel Smith pubs are the best, I always go to the one in Brewer Street where you can easily get a seat and have a conversation.

  8. What a lovely little pub! And Samuel Smiths to boot - the best pub (in my humble opinion, anyway) here in Oxford serves Sam Smiths & has a cosy little basement bar. Beats all the student bars serving neon drinks by a country mile.
